With the new year in full swing, diving straight into big plans and ambitious goals can be tempting. But before we rush forward, I encourage you to pause. Take a moment to truly listen inward. What is your heart telling you about the life you want to create?
Listening inward isn’t just about reflecting on the past; it’s about noticing the lessons life is constantly teaching us. Every joy, every challenge—it’s all feedback that helps shape the path to a more fulfilling life.
Life’s Feedback is Always Teaching Us
When I work with clients, I ask them to examine their lives as they are now, not with judgment but with curiosity. The wins and the struggles are equally important.
- The joyful moments show you what fills your soul and aligns with your values. Maybe it’s the connection at family dinners, the pride in completing a project, or the peace of a quiet morning.
- The challenging moments are lessons in disguise. They help you recognize what needs to change, whether setting boundaries, rethinking priorities, or exploring a new direction.
Think about your journey over the past year. What patterns do you see? What’s bringing you joy, and what feels out of sync? These reflections will help you with the direction of your future.
The Power of Your Inner Voice
I get it—listening to your inner voice can be tough. For so many of us, that voice is quick to criticize. It says things like, “You’re not good enough,” or “You’ll never figure this out.”
But here’s the truth: You don’t have to let that voice control the narrative. When those thoughts creep in, ask yourself:
- Is this thought helping or holding me back?
- What would I say to a friend in my position?
I’ve seen incredible transformations happen when clients shift their self-talk. After years of telling herself she wasn’t “cut out” for success, one client began replacing that thought with, “I am capable, and I am learning.” That one change sparked her confidence to take steps she’d avoided for years.
Using Reflection to Guide Action
Listening inward allows your inner voice to guide you to meaningful action.
For me, this has been a constant practice. After my divorce, I had to relearn how to listen to myself—to understand what I truly wanted and what no longer served me. It was a slow process, but each small step brought me closer to my desired life.
So, ask yourself:
- What brought you joy this past year?
- What felt heavy or out of alignment?
You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. Start small. Maybe it’s carving out time for something you love or finally having that tough conversation you’ve been avoiding. Each small, intentional step builds momentum toward a life that feels true to you.
